Well there’s no fancy recipe to hot dogs (maybe that’s why they’re a comfort food) but just be sure to get something with real beef. If you’ve been living on those turkey things for a while you’ll be shocked to remember how good the real thing is.

Hopefully you’re getting in plenty of pool parties before the summer is over. But then this comfort food could also be great if you put on a parka in January and grill up some dogs along with some memories of warmer days.

As far as my wife is concerned, you can have almost anything with chocolate. When it comes to me, I can like almost anything as long as it’s with ice cream. The traditional banana split is always a hit or just the straight ice cream keeps me happy.

Here is a recipe for I got from my sister-in-law for home made lemon ice cream. It’s perfect for a hot summer day or it’s also great as a base for any flavor. I love trying this recipe with all kinds of flavors (just replace the lemon with vanilla for instance) and adding in leftover bits of sweets around the house. Chocolate cake or cookies are a good start.

The possibilities are endless but the freezer space isn’t. It’s best if eaten the same day.

Kristen’s Lemon Ice Cream:

1 pint milk

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon lemon extract

pour mixture into 1 quart container and freeze according to freezer instructions.

I hope you’re having a sweet summer!

I hope your summer is off to a great start.

Here’s my recipe.

2 eggs beaten

1tsp vanilla

1tbsp vegetable oil (or melted butter)

1 tbsp brown sugar

pinch of salt

1 cup milk

1 cup all purpose flour

3 tsp baking powder

chocolate chips (Ghirardelli semi-sweets are especially good)

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl (one with a pouring spout is preferrable) and pour out onto hot griddle to make approx. 4 inch circles. When bubbles appear, add chocolate chips and flip. Cook remaining side until dry in center. Top with whip cream and you can pretend to shave the face with your fork.

Here’s wishing you many a happy morning with your favorite carbohydrate.
